About DASSI
DASSI
is a not for profit organisation incorporated under the Associations
Incorporations Act 1981 (Vic) and provides attendant support
to enable people to live, learn and work independently in their
homes and communities.
DASSI
was first established in 1984 by a small group of people who wanted
a community based organisation that could provide attendant support
for people with disabilities in their homes and communities.
It
was intended that by developing an Attendant Support Service people
with a disability would have more freedom and liberty than what
they were receiving in institutional care. By enabling people
with a disability to pursue their own social, recreational, economic
and cultural interests, the quality of life of people with a disability,
and their families, would be significantly enhanced.
DASSI's
establishment resulted in the first consumer-controlled, self-managed
attendant support service in Australia . Funding was provided
by the Commonwealth Employment Initiatives Program and later the
Home and Community Care (HACC) program to provide service to 18
people with a disability.
In
2002 DASSI merged with a for profit attendant support agency called
Communitique. This doubled the number clients receiving service
and expanded the service into the western rural region of Victoria
.
In
December 2003 DASSI received ISO 9001:2000 certification. This
was followed up in December 2006 with recertification.
In
2006/07 DASSI delivered 522,186 hours of attendant support to
489 clients throughout Victoria . Funding was provided from 150
sources which included governments, government agencies, community
service organisations and private individuals.
The
development of DASSI has been the result of preserving the underlying
principles for which the organisation was founded.
