This course will help develop practical skills to enable those working in the helping professions to deal with requests and pressures that require workers to go beyond their professional and personal limits.  It aims to increase confidence in dealing with uncomfortable communication situations.

Being An Attendant At Conferences And Forums

DASSI is often asked to provide attendants for conferences and forums.  This means that attendants will often be working with people they do not know or have never met before.

This course equips you with understanding of conference protocol and skills in providing basic care.

 The course includes :

  • Working with unfamiliar clients
  • Representing DASSI
  • Keeping busy and making the most of your time
  • Non verbal communication
  • Assisting with meals, toileting, showering and catheter care

The aim of this course is to assist participants to develop a basic understanding of key legislation and legal principles relevant to the provision of services to people with disabilities and to develop basic skills in the application of these in their work.

Everyday Communication Interactions With People Who Are Difficult To Understand

The aim of this course is to become comfortable and knowledgeable in assisting a person with little or no speech in a range of situations, and to become familiar with the communication bill of rights.

Competencies Gained :

  • To list three possible reasons why a person is difficult to understand
  • To recognise receptive and expressive communication difficulties for people with different disabilities
  • To outline 4 strategies to use when communication breaks down
  • To demonstrate 5 strategies a communication partner uses to ensure a person with a severe impairment maintains control

This workshop explores the different values and attitudes towards disability, and the significant impact grief can have on the individual, carers and the whole family.

The course includes :

  • Rituals and celebrations associated with significant events in the life span which may set off grief and loss in families

Introduction To Cross Cultural Communication

The course aims to provide participants with the skills necessary to appropriately and confidently communicate with people from non-English speaking backgrounds.  The course highlights the issues and sensitivities involved when working with people from other cultures as well as providing a general overview of cultural diversity.

  • Working with interpreters on site/off site (telephone interpreters)
